The Sound
I’m working on sound now. We have Realtek ALC262 sound chip in our laptop.
Headphones works with front speakers together, if you select headphones in mixer on switches tab. To enable headphones only, you should mute Front channel in mixer. (on my older vaio laptop front speakers are muted when i plug in headphones automatically)
I still not able to make builtin microphone work..
UPD: Microphone plugged in front jack is working ok.
UPD2: Add options snd-hda-intel model=hippo into /etc/modprobe.d/options to enable headphones jack detection, thanks to Sean Carlos.

It odes work also if you give model=sony-assamd as snd_hda_intel kernel module option;
using this it does not require to mute the front channel in mixer;
i’ve not found a way to make headphones work also on sony sr19xn 😦

Evilaliv3, I have tried changing model for this driver, but builtin microphone did not work anyway. And I have not checked headphones hot-plug, I will try it today with different model names.

I cant have two programs access sound at the same time, i cant play mp3’s and with virtualbox open… and I cant watch youtube if songbird is open. Anyone find a solution to this?

Mohammad, I’m using ALSA, so I have HDA Intel (Alsa mixer) in mixer settings.
And in System->Preferences->Sound I have chose ALSA everywhere and all works ok.

Thanks it works perfect. I really wish the internal mic would work tho, does anyone know if the internal mic is separate from the Realtek ALC262 sound chip?

Hi,
Just an update to the internal mic not working issue. If you have a look here[1], you’ll notice it’s a known issue that has been reported to ALSA.

Hei guys,
I have a Sony VGN-FW140E and had problems with sound ever since i installed ubuntu. Got it working but no mic.
And now i come across:

I did everything there and nothing (you should try though it helped many)
But then i get the freaky idea to plug my headphones in the mic jack.
The crazy thing is that it made the internal mic work!?!?!?!?!
. You don’t sound on the headphones though and the recordings sound a bit muffed. But it works.
Maybe will help with the bug resolution:
Even crazier is that when i tried with some broken headphones with no sound in one ear the left channel of the mic got a buzzing input while the right worked well.
Also, if you play any sounds they are sent to the mic input too. (If you try to record something when you are using only your headphones you get the same input in the mic – with or without another set of headphones in the mic jack)

It didn’t get the internal mic working, your headphones are being used AS a mic. Mics and headphones have the same internals basically, but headphones are not as sensitive to sound coming in because they aren’t designed for that, which is why the sound is muffled.

Alexander, well I guess it would not work, but if you have vaio fz series, it should work.
But I can be wrong. I’ve tried this long time ago for microphone but have not tested headphones plug in.

So, this solution doesn’t works (( as i wrote, i have fw series and both ‘options snd-hda-intel model=vaio’ and ‘options snd-hda-intel model=sony-assamd’ not fix problems with switch between front and headphones

I found
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
options snd-hda-intel model=hippo
to be the best solution for a vgn-fw290 based on the options outlined here:

I’m using Fedora 10.

We can hack the mic another way. Just open laptop and connect wires from the build-in mic to the mic input on the front 😀

Add this line
options snd-hda-intel model=hippo

Setting model=toshiba-s06 enables the internal mic on my VGN-FW390! Thanks, neither installing the alsa packages from karmic nor setting model=sony-assamd worked for me.

Vaio VGN-FW41ZJ with internal mic here finally. I don’t much like these tweaks (options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba-s06) but as it roks, I’m on the same boat.

Vaio FW11M, internal microphone: no luck with any of the “options snd-hda-intel model=…” choices.
However, when I boot a recent Knoppix (>= 6.2), internal microphone works right out of the box. So there is hope. What#s different in Knoppix? They have ALSA 1.0.21 underlying, but installing that alone doesn’t help.

Managed to get it working with model=toshiba-s06. It is important to have the Realtek codec selected into the kernel, however. The thing is, you need to use pin 0x12 for the internal mic, which toshiba-s06 only does if you have the code in realtek-patch.c applied. You can find whether pin 0x12 is your internal mic by taking a look at the alsa-info output.
